WBT Wednesday- Where to Start?

Whether you are new to Whole Brain Teaching or have used WBT for years there is soooo much that is new this year it is easy to feel overwhelmed.I know I am feeling so excited but also overwhelmed and I have been using WBT since it was Power Teaching! There are just soooo many wonderful ebooks, webcasts, and ideas! Where do you start? When do you start what? What if it is not the beginning of the school year? Can you still start WBT? So many questions but no worries, we can do this!
I have decided to combine my Whole Brain Teaching blog with this one and start a weekly series on WBT. This week we will start at the beginning.

The classroom rules are the first cornerstone to me of Whole Brain Teaching and the first of the Big 7 I think every classroom needs (more about those next time).  Classroom rules are usually one of the first things you teach your class on the first day so they are one thing that is not easily changed after the beginning of the school year. That said if you are looking at this information and it is not the beginning of the year changes are your classroom rules are not working so don't be afraid to switch to these rules.
The best way to teach the other Big 7 is to teach the Five Classroom Rules. I LOVE the Five Rules because they cover every possible issue that may come up in class with Rule 4 and Rule 5.
Here are the official WBT Classroom Rules you get for free from WholeBrainTeaching.com

I have thought about making my own posters for the rules but I LOVE the posters from the WBT store shown in the official book by  co-creator of Whole Brain Teaching ,Chris Biffle AKA Coach B.

These are one of the few things WBT charges for and you can buy them HERE and support WBT.

The Amazing Andrea Schindler who is on the WBT executive board and runs the Kindergarten Certification Facebook page showed me one rule I do add, The Big Rule: ALWAYS Listen to your Teacher when they are Talking! This rule is key for our younger ones because they can't follow directions they didn't listen to. Here is a PDF for you to use for The Big Rule, just click HERE to download.

There are many posters on TeachersPayTeachers in different themes. These posters should all be free, just search WBT or Whole Brain Teaching. I like having my posters printed and laminated before the first day. To build community and buy in I have my students share out different ways we can follow the rules and ways we would be breaking the rules to create an anchor chart. You could also create posters with your students and guide them to creating these rules.

Coach B has now done over 80 webcasts! They are currently live on Mondays 5 PM Pacific, 6 PM Mountain, 7 PM Central, 8 PM Eastern but can all be seen on youtube HERE  Think of it as free professional development that you can do in your pajamas :)

Here is the first webcast on the Five Rules.

Here are the 2 videos from last year's Master Class webcast series

This year Coach B is doing a series of posts at Corkboard Connections and his first posts will be on the rules. Here are pins for the intro post, Coach's first post on Rule 1, his post on Rules 2 and 3 and his post on Rule 4.
